Doris Humphrey was born October 17, 1895 and died December 29, 1958. She was born and raised in Oak Park and even opened up a dance studio. She was one of the founders of modern dance in America.

Doris Humprey was born in Oak Park, Illinois and was a tenth generation American. She began dancing at an early age and was first encouraged by her Mom who was a pianist.
She grew up dancing throughout her entire elementary and high school education. She later joined her mother for a tour to the west and left high school at an early age. Since her parents were having financial difficulties, she opened a school of dance at the age of 18 which became an immediate success. She later moved to Los Angeles and studied and worked at Denishawn School for the next decade. Later she began to choreograph and moved to New York after touring for two years. She was the leader of modern dance. In the 1930’s she toured the United States and wrote books about modern dance and movement. She performed for many years until she became ill with arthritis. She wrote books and influenced thousands of dancers with her work and choreography.
She died in 1958 influencing many with her dance and choreographic talents.
