There are many troops who used to live here in Shueijiaoshe (Shueijiao
Community). One of them was Japanese Navy. Hence, Shueijiashe used to be
named "Japanese Navy Officer's Social Club" or "Officer's Entertainment
Club". Because Taiwan used to be dominated by Japan, many Japanese troops
settled down in many family houses valleys. Shueijiashe is one of the
valleys. Many dormitories were built here for Japanese troops to live.
Because of this, we now can witness many Japanese style architectures!
Let's discover the origin of "Japanese Navy Officer's Social Club"! In
about 1930s, Japanese army built 3 wide gravel roads around the foot
of Gueizih Hill at the back of Wufei Temple outside the Tainan Great South
Gate. Then he built 5 banks of Air Force Officer's dormitories of
different sizes on both sides of the road. These dorms were typical
Japanese dorms and the floor was made of tatami. At that time there were
no elegant kitchens, shower rooms or restrooms. However, these dorms could
function as the temporary dorms for officers and their families who serve
in Tainan Airport; also acting as officer's recreation center during their
vacations. People called it "Officer's Social Club" or
"Waterside Social Club" since it is very close to the sea. Now you must
have realized why it is called "Japanese Navy Officer's Social Club"!
And you must also have learned where it is when people talk about these
names! At present, there are eight complete Japanese style architectures
in Shueijiaoshe. They are ranked as historic spots and will be well
preserved. We must treasure these Japanese style architectures. Will it
remind you the historical origin of Japanese Navy Officer's Social Club
whenever you see Japanese style architectures?
